I have been tied up with work and new toys. Colin has had his own set of problems dealing with our lovely US tariff system. I’ll talk about what I’ve been doing in a minute, but first there’s this bloke…
Pseudechis porphyriacus a.k.a. “The red-bellied black snake”.
Pretty thing eh? Trouble is it’s a venomous Aussie snake, fortunately less venomous than most of the Aussie Elapid snakes, but still well and truly able to mess you up. Our boy Colin was wandering across his backyard at dusk, yakking with his uncle on his cellphone when he got tagged on the ankle by one of these guys. He can fill you all in if he wants to. The bottom line is he’s more or less over it and working to catch up with the backlog.
Yes it has been quiet here!
Re: Yes it has been quiet here!
Yep.. I played a game of tag and lost that round!!! Am starting to feel a lot better and energetic. Would have been a bit better a bit sooner but as the snake was wrongly identified initially (my fault, and it was on dusk, and I didn't even think it was a snake anyway), then the treatment slightly incorrect, managed to get a few complications that I'm getting medical treatment for.
The subsequent bad news was the one that got me was far more venomous that the one initially thought, the good news though, no one has died from that snake since about 1887, so my chances of survival were looking good! Not so my work socks that now have 2 holes in them, not happy about that.
On more of a nature conservation front, I won't be enacting any form of retribution... I don't believe in killing things just because of their natural instincts (within reason), I was on his ground, obviously it felt threatened, and he was outside the house yard as the rules of the property state!!
Those snakes are pretty common here too, and the general consensus is, if you are going to have a venomous snake around your property, the Red Belly Black Snake is the one to have. They are pretty timid and would rather go the opposite direction than fight it out. Great for keeping down the rats and mice population as well.
The weather conditions over the p0ast 6 months or so have been perfect breeding for them too. Good rain, lush growth, means plenty of rats, mice, frogs, lizards (ie: their primary food sources). Funny thing is I used to walk all over this farm as a kid, sometimes bare-foot, play under the old house with my Matchbox cars, in the barn, sheds, in the thick scrub etc, not once was bitten.
Anyway, thanks Chris for giving the update, and as the saying goes.. whatever doesn't kill me only makes me... not want to go walking around outside in the dark through the scrub!
Wasn't that bad, but wouldn't do it twice!
