New Part - Registration / Number Plates

Post by admin »

G'day All,

Thought I'd kick this off with a small part I've been tinkering with in my (not so) spare time.

This had to be done, new registration plates.

The font has been faithfully recreated in 3D to match the one used in the 1960's era United Kingdom.

It features all letters and numbers, in a slightly trapezoidal / domed cross section.

Interestingly, in the UK in the 60's there was no pre-determined size of the plates, so a lot of variation is found depending on how many letters and numbers were present.

So, on that basis, I will make these available with a standard JAGUAR XK-E, E-Type etc... I'll come up with a few standard options, but the cool part is being able to produce a custom plate for your build. Obviously I'll have to charge a little more for this but as always, I'll do what I can to keep the prices as low as possible.

I will most likely also supply this with the ''sticker'' for the front plate but if you guys aren't really into putting a sticker on the front of your freshly built Jag, let me know.

ChrisCraddock pointed out that technically the rear plate housing section is incorrect shape on the model (what a surprise...!!) so if you are going to modify and correct this area let me know and I can change the plate dimensions to suit your needs, otherwise, it will be provided to fit the original kit part.

Very nice Colin. I will have to think of something for a plate. How unusual about something not being correct with the model kit. So would that be kit glitch #27? Or higher? Oh well keeps us having to figure things out.

Yes Ed, that’s probably about the right number. For what it’s worth, I started paying attention to photos of the real cars and now I kinda wish I hadn’t. There are so many things that are “not right” that it is making me a little (more?) crazy trying to work around them. I know it’s supposed to be a model and not a replica, but it wouldn’t have taken Revell/Monogram any more effort to get the shapes and fit/finish closer to the real thing. It was just a sloppy job. Which is fine with me really, because I LIKE improving my builds.

For the rear license plate, the kit has a “< plate >” shaped opening and the real car has a “| plate |” opening. Oh, and the real car’s plate opening is surrounded by a chrome strip across the left/top/right. Once you’ve seen it, you can’t unsee it.

Also the 3-way fit of the plate section and the upper and lower body halves is particularly sloppy in the kit. My current plan is to build a styrene “frame” with vertical sides, then hog out enough material to plug that into the body. I will probably need a liberal application of putty to complete the effect.

“Oh well”
Chris
