Re-starting Model Making (Ed B - Legacy Post)

Post by admin »

Okay, just to show how I got back into model making, here are the ones I started with. They must have had a whopping 20-30 pieces in the kits, but the fun was in painting them as weird as I wanted. They are models designed by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. He was a hot rod designer in the late 50's to early 60's. He also did airbrush paintings, that he would sell at the car shows. Revell models asked if he would let them make models of his drawings, and this is what a couple of them were.

I needed to see, can I still paint, can I put together a model kit?? The madness began once again. But one must always have a crazy side........

I love hearing stories like this! Those Ed ''Big Daddy'' Roth models always bring a smile to my face, and a giggle in their ''weirdness and I don't care'' factor!

I'm curious, how are they to build given the parts are designed to be exaggerated and ''wonky''?

Actually the parts actually fit together really good. Hard to believe for a kit that cost very little when they first came out. I actually built both of them when I was just getting started in model building. I actually bought them quite a few, long years ago when I wanted to get back into it, as they were easy to build, but back then way harder to paint. Granted, when I first did them I think I was maybe 8-9 years old.

But I have to admit, I still had a blast doing them once again. Brought memories of how much I enjoyed it when I was young.

Thus, the demon, once again arose........... Can I do better?????????

Did anyone else here build those tiny 1/72 scale Airfix models in the plastic bags? There were Spitfires and Hurricanes and loads of other WW2 planes hanging in my local Newsagent’s store in little plastic bags with a stapled cardboard flap. Very Low-res, with small parts count, but they were only a couple of dollars each so I built them all. Hideous glue bombs if I’m honest, but I loved them. That’s when the bug bit.

I eventually discovered the “Big Scale” 1/12 Tamiya formula 1 kits and built every one I could get my hands on. That cemented my interest in and preference for large scale car models. I still like other models, especially aircraft, but cars (and bikes) have always been my favorites.

Chris,

I am not sure about the model kits, or who it may have been "from", but I had at one time, suspended from my bedroom ceiling, a RAF Spitfire, A P51-Mustang and the 1701- Starship Enterprise! And the Enterprise had lights!! Just red and green but was really cool when I turned off the lights.

But I know what you a saying, there were so many kits out there, not really costly, that you could sort of go crazy. My friends and I at school, would talk about what we were building. And we all thought it was cool.
